Copilot in Business Central vs. Dynamics GP: The Round GP Can’t Enter-Round 46

Welcome back to our Dynamics GP vs. Dynamics Business Central Functionality Face-Off. This is Round 46, and we’ll be honest up front: this one is not a fair fight. Dynamics GP has no Copilot and never will. GP was designed decades before AI assistants existed, and Microsoft’s innovation investment now goes to Business Central. So instead of a side-by-side walkthrough, this round is a tour of what Copilot actually does in BC today — so you can judge what your team is missing.

No hype, no “someday” features. Everything below is documented, shipping functionality.

What GP users do today

Every task below has a GP equivalent — it’s just a person doing it by hand.

  • Reconciling the bank means checking off transactions one by one (we covered it in Round 4).
  • Finding data means building a SmartList or asking someone who knows the tables.
  • Writing a product description means opening Word.
  • Matching a vendor invoice to a purchase order means reading both documents line by line.

GP does what it has always done, reliably. It just doesn’t help.

What Copilot does in Business Central

  1. Chat with your data. Ask Copilot questions in plain language — “show me open sales orders for this customer” — and it finds records, answers questions about your data, and explains how features work, right inside BC (Microsoft Learn). You can even ask it to group records or run calculations like sums and averages.
  2. Analyze any list. Analysis assist turns a raw list into an analysis view — grouping, pivots, filters, and totals — without exporting anything or leaving BC (Microsoft Learn). It works on custom lists and tables, too. Pair it with what we covered in Round 45 on Power BI and the reporting story gets very strong.
  3. Reconcile the bank faster. BC already automatches most bank transactions. Copilot goes further: it matches more of the leftovers and suggests G/L accounts to post the transactions that remain (Microsoft Learn). The month-end checkbox marathon becomes a review of suggestions.
  4. Write marketing text. For any item, Copilot drafts a product description tailored to the item’s attributes — ready for online shops like Shopify — with tone and length you control (Microsoft Learn). One click, then edit to taste.
  5. Suggest sales lines. On quotes, orders, and invoices, Copilot suggests the items to add — from a typed request or even a file the customer sent (Microsoft Learn). Repeat orders stop being retyping exercises.
  6. Match e-invoices to purchase orders. Copilot maps vendor e-invoice lines to purchase order lines, proposes matches, and flags exceptions for review (Microsoft Learn). The three-way match gets an assistant.

Why BC comes out ahead

Here’s the honest part: GP isn’t losing this round because it does these jobs badly. GP shops have run tight, accurate books for decades. GP is losing because the round doesn’t exist for it — there is no AI assistant, and there is no roadmap that adds one.

Copilot isn’t magic. Every suggestion above is reviewed by a human before it posts — you stay in control. But across a month of bank recs, order entry, invoice matching, and reporting questions, “reviewed the suggestion” beats “did it from scratch” hundreds of times over. That time goes back to your team. And each release wave adds more, which is exactly the point of being on the product where Microsoft invests — something we track in our Dynamics news updates.
